Description
A view of Mount Lassen in Lassen Volcanic National Park as seen from the base of Cinder Cone looking across some of the Painted Dunes created during the last eruption of Cinder Cone, believed to have been around 1666. When hiking the trail that begins at Butte Lake, one walks along loose scoria - a form of volcanic ash. The scenery is incredibly beautiful. From dark volcanic rock, to the soft, almost sand-like volcanic ash, to the red-topped Painted Dunes created in one of the stages of the last eruption, this is a truly amazing place to visit. In this view one can see the volcanic ash in the foreground, the red, brightly oxidized ash that tops the Painted Dunes is visible in the middle of the image and in the background one can see the forest across the park leading up to Lassen Peak in the far background.
