Description
This image was taken at the Pacific Grove Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Pacific Grove, California, just south of Monterey. Each year some of the migrating Monarch Butterflies spend their winter in Pacific Grove. When Spring arrives, they begin their mating rituals. The male butterfly attempts to "capture" the female and force her to the ground where the ritual begins. According to the docent who was at the sanctuary the day this image was taken, the male butterfly will essentially go after anything that flutters by his line of sight whether a male or a female butterfly - or even just a leaf dancing in the wind.
This image taken during mating season is of two male Monarchs; one is attempting to dominate the other mistakenly thinking he has captured a female, and the other attempting to avoid the attempts of the first Monarch and break free.
