Description
Bowling Ball Beach, part of Schooner Gulch State Beach in Mendocino County of Northern California is a uniquely beautiful beach - especially at low tide when the concretions that give Bowling Ball Beach its name are visible. As the water level recedes, the beach's collection of spherical sandstone rocks are revealed - a fun and amazing bit of earth's geology. Many are covered in slippery green seaweed and care needs to be taken as one walks through the tidal pool areas.
In addition to the unique characteristic and formation of the rocks, there are large sandy areas to enjoy a picnic, building sandcastles or whatever fun one would normally have at a typical beach, as well as some stunning cliff formations that make their way down to the water's edge. Schooner's Gulch also has hiking trails and, according to the state beach website, is a great location for other activities such as fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, wind surfing, surfing and geocaching
This scenic beach and headlands are a perfect location for a day of fun and for gazing out over the Pacific Ocean at sunset and taking in the incredible view.
